18th c. Ottoman wallet in Morocco leather with an accordion style green silk interior and gilt brass (tombac) lock plate. Rococo style arabesque designs in gilt silver thread cover both sides with large embroidered script “Constantinople 1789”.
As the capital of the Islamic Ottoman empire (1453-1923), Constantinople was an essential trade city on the silk route connecting Asia and the West. In the 17th and 18thcentury, wallets and folios like these were functional souvenirs for the traveling European merchant class.
