Target shooting dates back to the Ancient Greeks, although many early cultures developed their own similar events for military and recreational purposes. In the Middle Ages, the first shooting clubs(Schützenvereine) began in Germanic regions with longbows, crossbows and later wheel-lock muskets. By the 16th century, accurate rifled firearms and painted wooden targets were used for marksmanship competitions during yearly festivals(schützenfeste).
