Italian Renaissance Wafer Iron

Hand-forged wafer iron. Italian, 16th century.
Depicted in woodcuts as early as the 14th century, these irons were used to create large thin wafers flavored with spices such as bergamot, rosewater, sugar, ginger and cinnamon. This tool creates a double-sided disc wafer with a raised decoration of Renaissance figures, putti and foliate patterns. Often made during special occasions such as Saint's days, there is an obvious relation to the Christian sacramental bread or host. In addition, wafers were considered a digestive and treat at the end of a meal and were frequently enjoyed by the wealthier classes.
