Renaissance Pastiglia Box

$6,800.00

Northern Italian (poss. Venice or Ferarra) pastiglia box c. ‪1480-1550‬. This Renaissance box is constructed from an alder wood top and bottom with bentwood sides of poplar connected with simple metal pins. The low relief decoration is made of pastiglia- a mixture of white lead paste, vinegar and egg white with traces of gilding and azurite painting. Created with the use of lead matrices, the relief is attached to the wood surface while still pliable.

Pastiglia, frequently scented with musk paste(pasta di muschio), including essences of moss, amber and civet, was believed to be an aphrodisiac aiding in the conception of children. In addition, it helped to diffuse odors and was thought to protect against pestilence. These vanity boxes were valued possessions given as part of a bride’s trousseau, used to hold small precious items such as combs, cosmetics, jewelry and devotional objects, each being infused with a distinct scent.

Similar to larger chests(cassone), most pieces display themes of love, strength and devotion referencing Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, Biblical stories and historical events. In this case, the top shows symmetrical foliate decoration flanked by two angels. Around the side, a series of griffins (gryps) with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion symbolizing majesty, power, devotion and the protection of treasures.

8h x 13 diameter cm.
