Large Devotional Medallion
Large Devotional Medallion
Late 17th/early 18th century Spanish (Castile and León) partially gilt silver medallion pendant (patena). Central engraved plate with stylized “IHS” Christogram and vegetal motif surrounded by spiral threading, corded edges and six pierced terminals.
The name “patena” refers to a type of large medallion in liturgical dress with connections to ancient Roman and Byzantine jewelry. Similar pieces are first recorded around the 10th-13th centuries and worn in rural areas in the Kingdom of León. In the 15th century, it was fashioned as a jewel of nobility with colorful enamels and gemstones. Later, simpler forms retaining incised decoration, sometimes highlighted by niello, developed through the centuries as a part of Spanish popular dress. Varying sizes, shapes and the application of decorative techniques became an expression of devotion and social status.
