St. Teresa & St. Anthony Pendant
St. Teresa & St. Anthony Pendant
17th century Spanish Gold Devotional Pendant. Opaque black and white champlevé enamel surrounds a border of bright green and red translucent enamel “set” to resemble emeralds and rubies. Each side contains an image of a saint hand painted in gouache on parchment set under a beveled octagonal crystal.
One side shows Spanish Carmelite Nun St. Teresa of Avilà (1515-1582) and her vision of the Dove. A banner above reads MISERICORDIAS DOMINUS (Mercies of the Lord).
The reverse shows Portuguese Franciscan Friar St. Anthony of Padua(1195-1231) visited by the Infant Christ.
This rare jewel is an example of the desires of the wealthy Spanish court and church for visual splendor and devotional extravagance at the opening of the 17th century.
