The coral of Trapani has been recognized since the 12th century with the discovery of several reefs along the western coast of Sicily. The art of carving coral flourished beginning in the 16th century. Resplendent devotional objects and secular decorative arts, as well as jewelry in the form of beads for rosaries and necklaces were produced.
A rare and precious natural material, coral was highly prized by wealthy patrons and the noble courts of Europe fueling the proliferation of such magnificent pieces up until the 19th century.
