Agnus Dei of Pope Pius VI No. 2
Large 18th century Italian sacramental wax disc or Agnus Dei. This devotional token represents the Lamb of God and a connection to the Divine. As early as the 5th century in Rome, they were created from the previous year’s Paschal candles and blessed during the liturgy by the Pope on the first year of his pontificate and every seven years following.
Surrounding the Lamb in Latin: ECCE AGNVS DEI QUI TOL(lit) PEC(cata) MVNDI. “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world”.
Below in raised letters PIVS VI, PMA IVB, 1775 - Indicating the first year of Pope Pius VI as Pontifex Maximus(1775-1799).
The obverse displays the dramatic image of Saint Dominic receiving the Rosary from Mary with Christ Child.
This image would have been selected by the Pope, expressing the importance of devotion and prayer as a weapon against evil.
